I couldn't resist to snag some flannel myself to make these for this little guy.

Happy 2012...and a GIVEAWAY

It seems that every year when January rolls around I always think "Wow, how did that year go by so fast?" Is it just me or does it seem like the older I get time actually feels like it goes faster? There have been many years of my life that seems a little like the movie "Groundhog Day" where everything stays pretty much the same... work, work, work, and a little play. Nothing bad happens but nothing particularly exciting happens either. However, this past year was one of big changes! We had a successful year thanks to all of YOU - our wonderful customers! We also had 2 new additions to our Sproutz family. This little cutie (who is not so little anymore) made his appearance in February and his little cousin (pictured on the left) arrived in October. These little guys are firsts for both of us, so lets just say 2011 was a year of "firsts" and lots adjustments :)

Central Park Coasters - Light Green and Yellow

The last few days I've been going crazy because I could not find these pictures on my computer anywhere. I searched in all the folders that I could think of, until yesterday when I had an epiphany. I remembered that I uploaded the photos at the same time that I was uploading some pictures of baby Bennett. So then I was searched through all of Bennett's folders and found them! I was happy. I knew I could get more pictures if needed, because I gave these coasters to my mom, but I was sure happy when I found them on my computer.

These were made as just a little "thank you" to my mom for helping me so much during my pregnancy (I was on bed-rest). Our relationship is a little lopsided, she dropped everything else she had going and fed us, cleaned my house, did laundry for 3 weeks, took me to doctor appointments, not to mention all the things she bought for us in preparation for her (13th!) new grandchild. Coasters doesn't really even things out, so its a good thing she loves me. :)

I used Central Park by Kate Spain in some Light Green and Yellow prints. I love how they turned out. I used 1 1/2 inch strips and then stitched in the ditch for the top. Recently, I was surprised to see that apparently some modern quilters recommend avoiding "stitching in the ditch" like in this book, but I like how it turned out in this project. The great thing about sewing about creating your own project is that you can do it however you want.

If you like the fabrics I used, I decided to put up a set in our shop.

We received a few new shipments this past week. First up we have Heirloom by Joel Dewberry for Free Spirit. Joel Dewberry has such amazing talent. His work is inspiring and the colorways are always so refreshing. Being 7 months pregnant, the repetitiveness of my rotating outfits is getting quite old (am I the only one to feel this way?) So I am really looking forward to whipping up a NON-maternity skirt using Amy Butler's Barcelona Skirt Pattern in the lovely print below. This is all after the baby weight of course :)

Heirloom - Ornate Floral in Amber

To take all the hard work out of it, we have put some sets together in the Jade and Amber colorway as well as the Jade and Dandelion colorway. These sets all come in half yards, full yards, and fat quarters. If you need more or less than what is listed just contact us!

Next we have Lost and Found by Jen Allyson for Riley Blake Designs. I adore the elegant touch of this line. And once again another project has been added to my list (between getting the nursery done and organizing, ha!) Recovering my kitchen chairs in the black Damask print would add a touch of class and really pull things together. I can also see everything girly in this print from hair accessories to dresses - too bad I am having a boy!

Baby Shower Gift

Every summer my husband and I (and now Baby B) try to spend a week in Seattle, because that is where my husband grew up and his parents are still there. We had a wonderful time in Seattle and I had a baby shower invitation waiting for me in our pile of mail when I got home late Tuesday night. The shower is for a friend that I got to know through church, but she also happens to be best friends with one of my husband's good friends from growing up in Seattle. I love little connections like that. Turns out this girl also came to our wedding reception! Yep, she came to our reception with my husband's friend. Somehow we figured all this out.

Anyway, the shower is this Saturday and she is having a boy, due in August. I'm so excited because our little guys will only be about 6 months apart and she just lives around the block from me.

My go-to baby shower gift is a Car Seat Canopy, but I found out that she already had one, so I settled on a Mitered Corner Blanket, because you can never have too many blankets. Especially because the ones I make are super cute.

I made a super cute one a while back using the Wheels collection by Riley Blake and I now I can't find the picture. Oh well.

Yesterday afternoon, I debated many combinations of fabric. This was going to be my Flannel/Flannel combo...super cute, but I decided I wanted to use minky for the middle.

So then, I couldn't decide if I wanted to use black minky or brown minky. I opted for the brown since I already had the perfect size square in my stash. Love it when that happens! Must be leftover from one of my other blankets.

Who is October Afternoon?

The latest collection we have in our shop is Farm Fresh by October Afternoon. I love these prints! Every single one of them can stand on their own. The gingham prints especially catch my eye and remind me of summer picnics at the park. The piggies, sheep, cows and other farm animals are too precious. I can see so many projects made with these prints. The project that tops my list is the kitchen dish towels that were on display in the the Riley Blake Booth at Quilt Market back in May (in the picture below). These prints will be the perfect accent to my red country kitchen. I can't wait to post pictures!

So who is behind this delightful Farm Fresh line? October Afternoon was started by Jonathan and Kimberlie Denton as a scrapbook company back in 2006 and has now teamed up with Riley Blake and expanded into the fabric industry. Hiatus!

Between packing orders, lifting boxes, unpacking NEW fabric, oh and baking and having babies... Our blog has been a wee bit neglected over the past several months. But WE ARE BACK!

Back in February this little guy was introduced to the world! And in October he will welcome his little cousin!

But between now and then we have got some big plans of projects, tutorials and lots of new fabric to share.

Noteworthy Changes:

Quick and Easy Christmas Gift Idea for Neighbors and Friends

Hot Pads Christmas Gift Idea Tutorial

Yields 20 Hot Pads

Materials Needed:
1 Jelly Roll –
1 1/4 yd backing
1 1/4 yd thin cotton batting such as Warm and Natural
1 1/4 yd wide Insul-Bright thermal batting
Thread that matches your backing fabric

A Walking foot for your machine is highly recommended

Optional:
Grommet Kit

Choose 20 strips to be used as the top of your hot pad and 20 to be used as bindings

Method:

1. Lay backing on a flat surface wrong side up – use a nice large table or the floor.

2. Center your cotton batting and thermal batting on top of your backing

3. Lay out 20 Jelly Roll strips into your desired order for the top of your hot pads—do this to the side, not on top of the batting yet.

4. Place one strip on the edge of the batting right side up. Stitch a scant 1/4" along the edge to secure all 3 layers.

5. Add another strip directly on top so that right sides of the jelly roll strips are together. Match up the selvages and make sure all the white selvages are at the same end. Also, if you have directional fabric, make sure it is going the same direction as your backing. Don’t be afraid to use a lot of pins to keep your fabric in place because unpicking your seam will not be fun if your fabric shifts. Sew a 1/4" seam down the length -- so you are sewing 2 jelly roll strips 2 layers of batting and your backing all in one seam.

6. Open the strip and finger press the newly sewed row into place making sure there are no wrinkles and that it is smooth.

7. Place the next strip of your choice on top of the second Jelly Roll strip right sides together and pin in place every couple of inches. Repeat until 5 strips are attached.

9. After your fifth strip is attached finger press open and sew a scant 1/4" seam securing the fifth strip to the batting and backing.

10. Trim the five sewed strips from the batting and backing.

Repeat three more times

Using your ruler and rotary cutter you should be able to cut 5 hot pads across the width of your fabric approximately every 8 1/2 inches.

Finishing
Bind using a jelly roll strip. You can either add a loop when you are binding for hanging or add a grommet in the corner. We have included pictures for both.

Most the time when the UPS man drops something off I know what's coming. I am usually sent a shipping notice and some type of tracking number from the manufacturer letting me know to expect my shipment. Mother's Day

I have some news for you all...I have the best Mother in the wOrLd - and I think most of you think the same about YOUR mother! If your growing up years were anything like mine my Mother was a BIG part of my sewing experience. One of my best (and maybe least fun -- there was lots of unpicking with this quilt) - memories was working with my mom on THIS quilt and it's something now I truly cherish. Being an Aunt is Great...

I have a niece that is 10. She loves to sew. A few weeks ago she came and took a tour of our StUdIo for the first time. Amanda was in heaven! The next time I saw Amanda's mom she gave me something that Amanda had made. Amanda put her drawing skills to the test and made us an awesome sign for our StUdIo.

I am Converted...

I am going to be honest... In my recent past I am completely guilty of strolling down the isle of Wal-Mart and thinking "oh, I need some thread" and so I would head over to their sewing isle and pick up the LEAST expensive thread -- thinking that it was just as good as any other thread. Well I have recently been converted into a true THREAD SNOB!

I have a fabulous sister (4 in fact) but this one in particular lives in SUNNY St. George, Utah. She recently introduced me to something special. I truly was converted at first use :). Have you heard of Superior Threads? Since Superior Threads head quarters and my sister are in the same town I thought this was a fantastic reason to make the 3.5 hour drive south to make a visit - soaking in the Dixie sunshine is always a bonus. Superior Threads has SO much to choose from. My favorites are the "MasterPiece" and "So Fine" threads... I think they are my favorite because those are the only ones I have tried to this point. lol.

What's so special about this thread?

MasterPiece Thread - This thread is created from extra-long Egyptian cotton. It's so wonderful to work with because it is a strong thread and produces very little lint! You will be amazed at how smooth and flat your seams will turn out. This thread is great for piecing, quilting as well as machine quilting. This thread comes on a min. 600yd spool - That's A LOT of thread!

So Fine! - This is a very soft etched polyester thread to give the thread strength but yet keep the feel of a cotton thread without the lint. This thread great for quilting or just general sewing.

We had a great time making the rounds around Superior Threads warehouse and I picked up a few things to share with all of you! I am on a mission to convert YOU into Thread Snobs. We are very lucky to be only 24 miles away from Riley Blake head quarters. As native Utahn's we LOVE the fact that many of the fabulous lines that Riley Blake provides are designed from LOCAL designers (local for us at least :P) We were invited to an Open House on Friday where we were able to meet with the reps and order MORE fabric. Minky Mania Strip Quilt

Sew, sew as fast as you can! Some of us have been very busy, creating some super cute and cuddly quilts!! I love this Cozy Minky Strip Quilt. It uses the quilt-as-you-go method so when you have the strips sewn together it is already quilted and ready for binding!

When piecing a quilt, I have found that I enjoy the process much more when I'm not frustrated because I am wasting time trying to find the things I need. For example, this is a great tip that I learned from my Mom...

When working on a project, put each page of the pattern into plastic sheet protectors and then into a report folder or binder. It will keep your pattern nice for future use, keeps the pages in order, and you can actually find your pattern when you need it!

Unfinished Business...

Way back in November I decided I'd better start cranking through my back log of fabric and craft "somedays" so that come January I wouldn't be guilted into making any crazy New Year's Resolutions like "don't start new projects until all the other ones are completed." or "no new craft supplies!" (What?? the horror!!) First up was my growing stack of charm packs from the Sproutz store. I love charm packs because I am not a great decision maker, or a great "no" sayer (is that a word?) so, I usually end up buying one of everything.... With charm packs I get to have just a little bit of a lot of great fabrics! And there are a lot of fun ways to use them (remember when the Sproutz ladies posted one charm pack project everyday for a month? you can still find them on the sidebar!)

There are lots of great skirt tutorials out there. The one I use the most can be found on The Polka-dot Chair, but the truth is, this project was mostly trial and error (read: unpicking.) But I finally got it right and I love the way it turned out. I love the floral prints in this fabric line, I love the colors with the denim, I love the ric-rac, I love the finished hem I got by using the leg seam of the jeans and I love the sassy way the skirt hangs on my daughters hips--actually she is a skinny little thing with no hips, but it does look really cute!

And the good news is...I'm off to scout out new fabrics to fill my (sort of) empty shelves!

This seems so obvious... but how come I went YEARS before I figured this out?

You know those items that you bought on a whim because it was on sale but still hangs in your closet with the tags still on it? If you are anything like me I feel "guilty" for getting rid of these things hanging in my closet however, I have found that if I can reuse the unused I don't feel so bad. Before getting rid of clothing see if the fabric or the buttons are worth keeping to create something new... they often are! Some of the best buttons I have are from old shirts or jackets that I snagged off before getting rid of them.

Have you ever had trouble threading your needle? Try cutting the end of the thread at an angle. You would be surprised how much easier it is. Also, try threading your needle in front of a white background. This will make it easier to see the eye.

Measure twice, cut once!

"I will just hurry and cut this one," is not a good thought to have when cutting out any sewing project. This is what happens to me when I'm not careful:

1. Cutting pieces too small.
2. Cutting pieces too large--wait, this one isn't bad, right...you can just trim it up! Most times that is probably true, but if you don't have a lot of excess fabric, it could create problems for you next piece...don't ask me how I know :(
3. My ruler slips and I don't cut the fabric straight.
4. I'm cutting too fast and my rotary cutter strays away from my ruler.
5. Cutting pieces the wrong size and not realizing until after I have started sewing. (I have a special relationship with my seam ripper.)

I've learned that I never regret double-checking!

{Sewing Something} #6 - Pre cuts

"Pre-cuts" are all the rage in the sewing community lately. I talk about these so much that often times I forget that the outside the sewing community or a new sewer may not know what I am talking about! Since I get so many questions about "pre-cuts" I have compiled an FAQ. There is so much info to share I will continue on this subject next week, and probably the week after that too ;)

1. What are pre-cuts?
pre-cuts are a group of several fabrics that have already been cut out into a specific shape or length.

2. Why would I want a pre-cut?
Pre-cuts are a very convenient way to take the hard part (cutting) out of sewing. They are accurately cut and they give you a great variety of fabrics without having to buy a large piece of each fabric in that line. Typically pre-cut groups will give you at least one (sometimes more) piece of fabric that is in that particular fabric line.

3. What type of pre-cuts are there?
Charm Packs, Layer Cakes, Jelly Rolls, Honey Buns, Dessert Rolls, Turnovers... Yes we are still talking fabric, not a dessert bar :)

Charm Packs - 5 x 5 inch squares
Layer Cakes - 10 x 10 inch squares
Jelly Rolls - 2 1/2 inch strips - usually about 44/45 inches long depending on the fabric line
Honey Buns - 1 1/2 inch strips - usually about 44/45 inches long depending on the fabric line
Dessert Rolls - 5 inch strips - usually about 44/45 inches long depending on the fabric line
Turnovers - 6 inch triangles

{Sewing Somethings} #5 - Rotary Cutters

What did the sewing world do without rotary cutters? I think that they are one of the most genius inventions! When rotary cutters came around it was good-bye to achy hands from scissors and hello to convenience and accuracy! When rotary cutters first came around there wasn't much to choose from, you just chose the rotary cutter that was sold in the fabric store. Now there are so many sizes of rotary cutters! It is so great to have options when you know what you are looking for, other times - especially for beginner sewers - it can be very confusing and overwhelming to know what rotary cutter to choose. Hopefully you will find this helpful and next time you buy a rotary cutter you will know which one is best for you!

Rotary Cutters vary in size from 18mm to 60mm and each of the them serve a purpose. The smaller blades are great for patterns that involve cutting rounded corners however, it is hard to cut through multiple layers of fabric and still get a "clean" cut. Larger blades work GREAT when you are cutting through multiple layers of fabric, for example, if you are piecing a quilt and need several pieces of fabric that are the same size, the large rotary cutter is awesome! Chances are that as your hobby of sewing continues you will collect more than one rotary cutter but if you could only choose one, and perhaps for your first one, I would highly recommend a rotary cutter that is 45mm in diameter. This rotary cutter is right down the middle for size - you can cut through a few layers of fabric with a "clean" cut and still maneuver around slightly round edges.

Ho, Ho, Ho!

So, you know when you see a great idea and you tuck it away in the little "future projects" portion of your brain, and then one day it just comes tumbling out? Or how about when you are hopping around your favorite craft blogs and you take a great idea and turn it into something totally different of your very own? I'm sure that happens to everyone....sometimes it happens to me. Sometimes my projects don't turn out so hot and my good ideas turn out to be not so good. But sometimes things come together and I feel like I really like crafting and sewing and creating. Then I send pictures to these cute Sproutz girls and they say nice things and make me feel good about my projects, and then I really think I like crafting and sewing and creating!

And sometimes they even ask me to write a post! I am so glad to be here today to share my latest project....

My silly six year-old has been begging for a Christmas pillow to put on her bed. Not sure why she decided this was an important part of celebrating the Christmas season, but she was not going to give up, and asked almost everyday when we could make a pillow. I kept putting her off, until one day, this post came tumbling out of my memory and got the wheels of my brain spinning....

And this is what I came up with!

Dontcha' think it's cute?! My daughter loves it, and I love it too, because she makes her bed everyday so she can properly display her pillow :)

It's a pretty straight-forward simple pillow, but I'm going to give you the play by play, just for fun!

Once everybody is lined up and ready to go, it comes together pretty fast. You will need:

2 14-inch squares of red fabric (I used fleece)

1 4-inch x 14-inch strip of trim fabric. (I used this furry stuff--it's kind of a pain because it makes a mess when you cut it. But I think it's cute. You could use lots of things for the trim though, like Minky or plain white fleece. If you use fur, just brush the fur to the side and try to cut right through the backing as much as you can. And have a lint roller handy--thanks for the tip Sharon!)

2 or 3 large buttons

And it goes like this:

Stitch the trim fabric straight down the center of the right side of one square of red fabric. I used a small zig-zag stitch. My red thread is covered pretty well by the white fur, but if you are using another kind of trim, such as Minky or fleece, you will probably want to press the sides under about 1/4 inch and top-stitch in white.

Put one square on top of the other, right sides together, and stitch completely around the pillow, leaving a small opening on one side (4-5 inches) to turn the pillow right side out, and for the stuffing. If you use fleece, I would recommend using at least 3/8" seam so your stitching will not pull out.

Turn the pillow right side out and push out the corners and seams so it looks straight.

Fill with stuffing.

Gently turn under and hand stitch closed the opening on the side.

Place and attach buttons.

Fluff and give to your daughter...and tell her to make her bed!

A lint roller is no longer used just for getting the lint off your sweater. I keep a lint roller in my sewing supplies and use it for a quick clean up of loose threads. Just simply roll it along your sewing table, your floor, and chairs and all your threads are picked up in a breeze. I have even used it after unpicking a seam and then used a lint roller along the fabric to pick up the little pieces of left over thread.

Charm Pack Skirt

Another one of our talented customers sharing what she has created. Don't you just love it? Renae is full of talent! She used a free pattern from The Polka Dot Chair mingled with her own variation. For the matching shirt she cut out the letter "B" by using a enlarged font on her computer as a template...genius. The "B" fit perfectly on one charm square. I think this outfit turned out darling. A perfect skirt full of personality and a perfect Christmas gift for her daughter. Renae used the charm pack Soiree by Lila Tueller from Moda Fabrics mixed with a little fabric she had in her own personal stash. I think this skirt would also be cute using Santorini -- another fabulous fabric line by Lila Tueller.

{Sewing Somethings} #2 - Fabric that Bleeds

Dark colors or reds can be a nightmare if you wash a quilt or clothing after its been made. If you are worried about fabric bleeding there are a couple things you can do.

1. Soak a small piece of the fabric in a cool, soapy water for about 30 minutes
2. Remove the fabric from the water and check for discolored water. If the water is discolored that means your fabric has bled some dye.
3. If the water is clear place the piece of fabric on a paper towel to dry. If the fabric dries and the paper towel is clean you can feel confident that your fabric won't bleed.

If the water or paper towel becomes discolored you can use what is called "Color Catchers"

You just toss the sheets in with the wash--either when you are pre-washing or when you wash the quilt for the first time and they are supposed to keep the fabrics from bleeding onto each other. The "color catchers" are wonderful and they are very reasonably priced. I purchase mine at Walmart for $3.72 for 24 sheets.

Pumpkins Pumpkins Pumpkins--Tutorial

Ok you are going to love this easy peasy lemon squeezy project!

Gather supplies
For the small pumpkin
**roll of toilet paper
**1 fat quarter of orange fabric

For the large pumpkin
**roll of paper towels
**about 30" of fabric that is 42-44 inches wide

You will also need:
**something for the stem ... ideas include a cinnamon stick or brown paper
**Pipe Cleaner in either Green or Brown
**Fall Leaves
**Raffia

I used the following fabrics (which are now on sale!) from the Pumpkin and Spice line by Deb Strain
**Stacked Circles Pumpkin
**Fall Shadow Pumpkin
**Tonal Pumpkin

The hard part is done! Now lay your fabric on the table. The pictures below show a fat quarter and a roll of toilet paper. If you are using a paper towel roll the instructions are the same.

First thing is to put your roll of toilet paper in the middle of your fat quarter.

Then gather your fabric and start pushing the raw ends down the core of the toilet paper. You can make some pleats in the fabric before stuffing it down the core if you like that look.

After pulling up all sides of the fabric and stuffing them down the core your pumpkin should look something like this

Then add your stem. I used a cinnamon stick in each of the small pumpkins and rolled up brown paper from a paper sack (Approx 8" X 12") in the large pumpkin.

Add other embellishments as desired. In these pictures I added a pipe cleaner that I wrapped around a pencil to make it curly, some silk autumn leaves, and then raffia.

And wa la! You can have your very own pumpkin patch in just a few minutes!!

Wouldn't it be fun to use these to decorate your home and table ..... then on Thanksgiving Day as your guests leave you could give one to each of them as a favor? Or what about getting your neighbor gifts done early this year? Why wait until Christmas when everyone is so stressed and busy to give gifts to the neighbors.

{Sewing Somethings} #1 -- Wash or Not to Wash?

The great debate in the sewing world is whether or not to prewash your fabric before starting a project. This is the number one question we get from customers so I thought it would be appropriate to make it our first {sewing something} I personally rarely prewash fabric with some exceptions but I know there are some quilters/sewers that do otherwise. For example, if I were making a removable pillow cases for the throw pillows on my couch, I would prewash. I wouldn't want to finish the pillow cases only to find out a month later when I wash them they shrink.

When prewashing fabric, wash in cool water on a delicate cycle and use a mild soap such as Ivory. You can also buy Orvus Soap that you can find in your local quilt shop, which is specifically made for washing fabrics/quilts. If you are washing small pieces, such as precuts or fat quarters, wash in a mesh, lingerie bag. This will prevent your fabrics from getting "lost" in the washer and prevent them from twisting.

Tumble Dry. Before tossing in the dryer, shake out your fabric. This will prevent creasing in your fabric which can result in color fading at the crease. Pull fabric out of the dryer when it is ALMOST dry. This will prevent wrinkles from setting in and ironing so much easier. Press fabric ASAP after coming out of the dryer.

I have never washed any of my precuts, I feel like that just really defeats the purpose of having the fabric pre-cut and ready to go. But in the end it is really up to your own personal preference and what you feel comfortable with. Do you prewash your fabric?

My fabric strips from my fellow swappers are starting to pour in. I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed that mail wasn't delivered on Wednesday, but that made my Thursday just a little more exciting. I don't know if the pictures are going to do these fabrics justice--LOOKING at pictures of fabric, certainly can never compete with HAVING fabric in your hand and seeing it with your own eyes.

Good news for my swappers: My packages are going in the mail today. Sorry it took so long, but you can see my strips are already cut. After the picture they went in nice plastic bags with a little something extra. It will be worth the wait.

The Perfect Bag

Ever since I saw this tote bag on the Moda Bake Shop website I wanted to whip one up. Then when I saw the Authentic by Sweetwater fabric line I knew I had found the perfect match! This bag is the perfect size for a purse, diaper bag, church bag, book bag, or take anywhere bag. It made up quick and is a perfect afternoon project.

I really liked the black and greens from this line and so I used the following fabrics:
**Handle Simple Spot in black and Simple Spot in Natural Black
**Bag Lining In Bloom in Black
**Pocket Lining Garden Gate in Black
**Bag fabric Authentic Spot On in Sprout

The pattern says to sew 3 pockets on the outside and I think next time I might only sew 2 pockets on the outside just to make it easier to stick my hand inside them. That is just my personal preference.

I think there are many fabrics out there that would be very cute made up with this pattern. The original pattern uses Hushabye which is adorable.

This project is highly recommended! Not only do I suggest to make one for yourself, but also keep it in mind for a great handmade holiday gift with a personal touch.

My First Fabric Swap Package Arrived!

My very first fabric swap package arrived from my very first fabric swap ever, and the package absolutely did not disappoint. I received some fabulous creamy fabrics and a little extra surprise too!

Gael, you really went above and beyond with the packaging. I love the glitter "L" -- so, so cute!

To my fellow swappers: I really, really wanted to get your packages out this weekend. However, you can see that instead of ironing and cutting your strips I decided to take a picture of my un-ironed and un-cut fabrics and create this blog post instead. Moda Bake Shop: Hushabye, Candy Box Quilt

I am a big fan of Moda Bake Shop because there are so many great projects and also because it introduces me to new super-talented bloggers. I love this quilt using Hushabye fabrics by Tula Pink created by Julie of Jaybird Quilts. She has the tutorial posted HERE on Moda Bake Shop.

This quilt uses a Layer Cake* and a Charm Pack* and I love that she has used all the scraps for a scrappy binding---no wasted fabric here! The finished quilt measures 50 x 60 inches, so it is the perfect size for a youth quilt or a lap quilt--a very manageable project! Here is a block up close:

We have just posted some kits in our Etsy Shop. Wouldn't this be a great Christmas gift--the finished quilt or even just the quilt kit! Over the weekend we worked with a customer who wanted to give a quilt kit to her Mother-in-law for Christmas. It got me thinking that this quilt kit would make a great gift for a young, modern sewer.

P.S. In case you aren't familiar with pre-cut fabric packs: A Layer Cake is a set of usually 42 squares that measure 10 x 10 inches. A Charm Pack is a set of usually 42 squares that measure 5 x 5 inches. You get at least one of each print in a fabric line in each pack. It is a great way to get a variety of coordinating fabrics.

So, I'm a little nervous. excited. or maybe just crazy? Do I really need to add another project to my list? I barely have time to start projects, let alone actually finish one. But when I saw this post on Fat Cat Quilts, I simply just couldn't resist! Allyson at Fat Cat Quilts issued a Red and White Snowball challenge and fabric swap for this quilt:

Isn't it gorgeous? This quilt looks much more involved than anything I have attempted before. Like I said, I'm a little nervous and excited at the same time. And not to mention this is my first fabric swap :) It will be fun. I signed up just in the nick of time...Has anyone tried a quilt like this before? It is from the book 40 Fabulous Quick-cut Quilts by Evelyn Sloppy, apparently...I wouldn't know first-hand because I don't even own this book....yet. Happy Friday everyone!

Peek-A-Boo Canopy

Two of my friends are having little babies, one a boy and one a girl. I had to make them both a canopy. This seems to be the "gift to give." Everyone that receives one just loves it! Especially this time of year. Canopy's really help protect from this changing weather of cold, rain and soon to be SNOW! Another great plus is the barrier this canopy creates to protect from GeRmS!!! AND I just love how your baby can have some privacy while sleeping.

For this cover I used Satorini by Lila Tueller. The top of the cover is Hibiscus in Leaf and the bottom of the cover is Ambrosia Tonal in Rose.

For this cover I use Essence by Sandy Gervais for Moda. The top of the Canopy is Circles in Cream. The bottom of the cover is Sany Solids in Brown.

I really love how both of these turned out! These sweet little babies will be protected and have some privacy :)

Easy Reversible Trick or Treat Bag -- Tutorial

This project has been on my list for way to long! The minute Spooktacular by Sanae arrived, I knew I wanted to make a trick-or-treat bag. I guess I was feeling the heat because Halloween is just around the corner and I finally finished the bag and the tutorial. My finished bag was on the small side 9 x 11 inches, perfect for a small child. Older children will want a larger bag, so I would adjust the measurements if you wanted to make this for an older child.

For the bag I made you will need:
1/3 Yard of Main Fabric
1/3 Yard of Lining Fabric
Fabric Marking Pen/Pencil
Ruler
I recommend using a rotary cutting supplies.

1. Cut 4 rectangles 9 x 11 inches, two rectangles each from your two fabrics.

2. Stack one lining fabric right sides together with one main fabric piece. With a fabric marking pen or pencil and ruler, draw a rectangle 1 1/2 inches tall and 4 inches wide. Placement of the rectangle is 3 inches down from the top and 3 1/2 inches in from the each edge.

Then with the two fabrics right sides together, pin and stitch accurately right on top of the rectangle that you have drawn.

3. Using a rotary cutter, or scissors, cut a slit in the middle of the rectangle.

4. Use the picture below to help explain this next part... Using sharp nosed scissors, from very close to the stitching line in each corner cut a diagonal slit from the center slit. Repeat on each corner. It is important to cut very close to the stitching line to prevent puckering when you turn the bag. This hole creates the bag handle.

5. Put your hand through the hole and pull one layer of fabric back through the hole.

6. Iron around the handle and topstitch to reinforce the handle. When topstitching around the rectangle leave the needle in the down position at the corners and pivot the fabric.

7. Now turn down the top raw edges of the fabric so that the lining side shows on the main fabric side until it meets the top of the handle. Iron in place to create a crease in the fabric.

8. Now fold the raw edge under to the crease and iron in place. Topstitch along the edge of the fold.

9. Stack both sides of the bag lining sides together

10. Trim up the edges of the fabric if necessary.

11. Stitch along all 3 raw edges of the fabric 1/4 inch from the edge. Clip and trim the seam allowance around the corners.

12. Turn the bag inside out and create a French Seam by sewing again about 1/2 inch from the edge, the seam allowance from your first seam should be hidden inside your second seam.

13. You can use the bag with "Lining Side Out" as in the picture above or turn the bag right side out in the picture below.

Slip-Flops (Slipper Flip-Flops)

Introducing Princess Sharon....

Sharon of Sproutz has not started making me call her Princess. (If you didn't already know, The Sproutz Store is run by a team of me (Laura) and one of my sisters, Sharon.) I'm talking about Princess Sharon, the very creative and fabulous children's party and event planner. You can check out her website here.

Princess Sharon clued me in to a super fun, no-sew craft, that would be great for a little girls birthday party. I was also thinking it would be fun for a stay-at-home-girls-night-out with do-it-yourself-pedicures and these fun spa-like flip flops.

Simply cut HoneyBun Strips into shorter strips of about 8-9 inches. You should be able to get 5 shorter strips from each HoneyBun strip. Then tie them around the flip-flop straps. Are they called straps? I'm calling them straps for lack of a better word at this moment.

The great news is that Princess Sharon is going to offer kits which will include the strips already cut into the perfect size, plus the flip-flops--all the hard work is done for you.

Halloween - Spooktacular

Whenever I put an order together I can't help but wonder what is being made with all the beautiful fabric. I absolutely love it when I get pictures of finished projects! Below is one picture I received from katedidstitches. She used Spooktacular by Sanae for Moda. This ornament is such cute decor for the Halloween season that I just had to share.

Pin Cushion Tutorial

Checkered Pin Cushion

I was going through my scrap stash and found 3 matching charm squares from Zippity Doo Dah and since I was in need of a new pin cushion I created a checkered one just to add some character. You could really just find some small scraps you have laying around and create something fun with all different squares.

1. Cut nine 1 1/2 inch squares.
2. Cut 2 strips 3/4 inches wide by 4 inches long
3. Cut 2 strips 3/4 inch wide by 5 inches long
4. Cut 1 square 4 x 4 inches in size.
5. Arrange in the pattern you would like them to be sewn together.

6. Sew squares right side together.
7. Press and trim threads
8. Take the 2 strips of fabric that are 3/4 x 4 inches and sew on to 2 parallel sides to create a border that will look like the picture below when finished.

9. Take the 2 remaining longer strips and sew to the remaining 2 parallel sides to finish the border.
10. Cut off any extra fabric from the long strips.
11. Press and trim any loose threads
12. Take the 4x4 inch square and sew right sides together to the checkered piece, leaving a 1 1/2 inch opening.
13. Flip right side out and stuff with batting.

14. Hand stitch closed.
15. Place pins in cushion.

Huashabye by Tula Pink

I had to get a new computer, kind of bitterweet. So happy to have a wonderful new machine, but sad because our computer really wasn't that old. Luckily the problem wasn't the hard drive so I still have everything from my old computer. It is so, so nice to have a computer back!

We've been posting lots of new fabric in the shop. One of my new favorites is Hushabye by Tula Pink. Just look at these yummy colors! The problem is that the picture do not do these beautiful fabrics justice. I've been drooling over the pictures for months and now that they are finally here I am in shock that I just love them even more in person. Enjoy the pictures!

I have a super fun Halloween tutorial that I have been planning for MONTHS...pretty much ever since Spooktacular arrived...I'm hoping to have it ready next week!

Computer Issues and New Fabric - Panache by Sanae

My computer has been down for almost 2 weeks now and it is driving me CRAZY! I have had access to another computer, but it is missing my pictures, programs and all my files. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be up and running tonight...we'll see. So, until I get my computer back, tutorials will have to wait, but I have some VERY fun ideas that I hope to post in the near future. Meanwhile you can enjoy pictures of this yummy fabric with colors like Pomegranate, Sprout, Bark and Eggshell. It is brand new from Sanae (same designer as Arcadia). The fabric line is called Panache and I just love it! Look for it in our shop tomorrow!

My First Quilt...

I thought it would be fun to take a walk down memory lane and post a few pictures of my first quilt. I would feel way too guilty taking 100% credit for this quilt. This quilt was mother motivated and we did it together. I wish I could take credit for the awesome pattern but we picked it up at our local quilt shop. It is a Utah Heritage quilt. The border and each block has a special meaning about the great state of Utah. At the time we were making this quilt I was a 17 year old, who of course knew everything. When it came to the unpicking and the re-sewing I probably wasn't the easiest quilter to get along with but now, 13 years later this quilt is really something I cherish! Thanks, Mom!

Bouquet of Patchwork Quilt: Candy Kisses

The big project (well big for me) that I have been working on is a wonderful quilt pattern by Quiltville called Bouquet of Patchwork. You can use a layer cake and a charm pack for the top and it makes the piecing go super quick. I, however, have been hanging on to some fat quarters of Candy Kisses by Sandy Gervais and I thought that this would be a perfect time to use them, so for my quilt I am using a charm pack, a panel and some fat quarters. You can see the present and sweet treats squares in the top of the first picture from the panel. I'm going to use those as some of my layer cake squares. The panel pictures are a little too small, so I'm going to have to piece a border around them. I was sooo disappointed that they weren't the size that I needed, but once I got the idea in my head to use them, I just couldn't let it go.

I've got all my charm squares sewn together and they came together super quick.

I will work on cutting up my fat quarters into 10 inch squares next....I'm not really looking forward to cutting all those squares next time I'm definitely going to use a layer cake instead!

A Work in Progress!

Is it just me or do the summer months seem to fly by faster then the rest? Remember this post? I was so excited and feeling so ambitious to have a beautiful table runner lay across my table all summer long but guess what?! That was 2 months ago and I am still not finished. To be honest I have made very little progress. Family barbecues, vacations, and days at the lake seemed to swallowed my sewing time, BUT I am ready to get to work and get this project done so my table doesn't look so bare! So I guess my "summer" project is now my "back to school" project :)
