I've had this idea for Patriotic Coasters in my head ever since I saw the Zippity Doo Dah Charm Packs. There are some very cute red, cream and blue prints that I just love!
SUPPLIES LIST (Makes a set of 8 coasters--you can easily do more or less!):
1 Zippity Doo Dah Charm Pack by Sandy Gervais
8 squares of quilt batting like Warm and Natural measuring 5 x 5 inches

Star Template (click to download template)
PATRIOTIC STAR COASTER TUTORIAL
1. Select the charm squares you want to use for your coasters. I tried to pick 3 squares that contrasted well. So if the top is blue, I selected a mostly cream or red star. I also selected the largest prints to use for the back of the coasters and the small prints to use for the top and the stars.
2. Use Star Template to cut out stars
3. Place your your charm squares right sides together. Now place a square of batting on top. Pin into place. I hate pinning, but you won't want to skip pinning here because with sewing through 3 layers it is easy for the pieces to slip.
4. Sew along all the raw edges, leaving a 2 inch opening on one of the sides.
5. Trim the batting very close to the seam. Clip Corners. Turn right side out.
6. Fold the opening inside to match the seam.
7. Top stitch about 1/8 inch from the edge along all 4 sides. This will also sew the opening closed.
8. Pin the star into place. Sew 1/8-1/4 inch from the raw edges of the star all the way around.
9. Repeat the steps to make as many as you want. I want to make a set of 8, but I only got 3 done last night when I was taking pictures. I will post the rest when I get them finished.
I also can't wait to see these washed once or twice to see the edges of the star get nice and ragged.
Want to make some Patriotic Coasters for yourself? There is still time if you order a Zippity Doo Dah Charm Pack from our Etsy Shop, today!! You could have it as soon as Saturday!
Enjoy!

I have that charm pack and had been trying to decide what to do besides pincushions! Now I'm thinking coasters and placemats!
Thanks!
