Procrastination

My planned how-to post for the burp cloths isn't ready, so I am finally posting about this quilt that has been finished for months.

This is the first quilt I've have completed all my by myself from start to finish. Cutting, piecing, quilting and binding -- all completed by me and I didn't even use a pattern. One day a thought popped into my head and I started pulling and cutting the fabric. When I started, I specifically did NOT want half-square triangles, although they make beautiful quilts, that was not the idea that I had in mind. I wanted to use perfect equilateral triangles and I absolutely love the results.

I quilted straight lines about 1/4 inch away from every seam on both sides. Here is a close-up of the quilting from the back:

I love this print for the back, it's Blossom in Charcoal from Ty Pennington's Impressions. The quilt is large enough that I had to piece the back, but I think I did a pretty good job of lining up the print:

I'm considering making this same type of quilt again, since the next time around it will go much faster. I love these triangles and I think it would make up pretty quick as a baby size. This quilt is about 69 x 77 inches, a very generous lap quilt.

Quilt Stats:
Fabric Collection: Impressions by Ty Pennington for Free Spirit Fabrics
Colors: Spice, Charcoal and Taupe
Backing and Binding: Blossom in Charcoal
Batting: Hobbs 80/20
Thread for Piecing and Quilting: Masterpiece 100% Cotton by Superior Threads Color #151 Canvas

Quilting Style: Straight line quilting, 1/4 inch away from the seam on both sides
Binding: Machine bound
Thread for Binding: Masterpiece 100% Cotton by Superior Threads Color #151Canvas and Polyester Monofilament Invisible Thread in Clear by Superior Threads
Finished Size: 69 x 77 Inches

I've waited so long to post this that much of this fabric collection is out of stock and not available anymore from the manufacturer, but the good news is that it is on SALE. Click Here to see the prints that we have left from this collection.

Happy Monday!

Dino-mite Part 2 (Receiving Blanket How-to)

My mom made me some great receiving blankets for when my little guy was born. I absolutely loved them, so I whipped up a few to go with the Babysaurus Car Seat Canopy.

Here is a super-quick how-to (no pictures since I wasn't thinking ahead and planning this how-to when I was sewing):

Supplies:
1 Yard Each of 2 Coordinating Flannel Prints
- I used Babysaurus by Little Yellow Bicycle for Blend Fabrics

How to make a quick receiving blanket:
1. Cut each piece of flannel fabric so that it measures 36 x 36.
2. Using a round plate or bowl and a fabric marking pencil, trace and then cut a rounded corners on all four corners
3. With right sides together, sew along all four edges leaving a 6 inch-ish or so opening. I used the edge of my regular sewing foot as a guide so my seams were about 1/2 inch. I like to do more than 1/4 inch with these blankets.
4. Cut notches in the seam allowance around the corners -- I cut 3 notches per corner.
5. Press seam open (super great tip coming soon!)
6. Turn blanket right sides out and iron the seam, including the opening so that it is nice and crisp.
7. Top stitch around the entire blanket, sewing the opening closed.

Makes a super quick baby gift and is extra special when paired with a matching Car Seat Canopy.

Trimming the fabric to 36 x 36 inches allows a little extra if you want to make some coordinating burp clothes. I'll show you how we do ours on Monday.

Here is another shot that really lets you see the fabric. I only made 2 blankets, but folded them in the picture so that you can see the front and back:

Another great baby gift that I use often is a Mitered Corner blanket.

Laura

Dino-mite - Part 1

Like a lot of us, I really wish I made more time for sewing, so a deadline really helps me to find the time to sew. More often than not, the deadline seems to be needing a baby gift. The complete gift took me two afternoons to finish. Today, I'm unveiling Part 1 - Car Seat Canopy using Babysauras Cotton from Blend Fabrics.

So, I give you my latest Car Seat Canopy creation:

Fabric Collection: Babysaurus by Little Yellow Bicycle for Blend Fabrics
Main Fabric: Dinos All Over in Navy
Coordinating Fabric: Big Dino Dots in Blue
Straps: Stripe in Navy
